From the town center, you’ll notice the bronze nails engraved with a cheerful unicorn. This “town path” takes you straight to the ruins of Gavray’s ducal castle, an archaeological site perched atop the rocky spur overlooking the commune. At the top, you’ll have the pleasure of admiring the surrounding countryside, as you find your way around the orientation tables, the colors changing with the seasons. You’ll also find a number of interpretation panels to help you find out more about the castle that once stood here. From the top of the site, other nails will show you other paths for nature walks: the round path, the forest path and the river path, all marked by different imprints on the bronze nails.

Dive into local historyThe board district
Worth a detour and a lookClose to the Bérence, a river once strewn with wooden planks to cross from the town to the village, lies the aptly named “Quartier de la Planche”. A picturesque district of Gavray, it’s sure to delight you along the 14.5km hiking trail no. 9 “Entre Sienne et Bérence” (with a possible variation to shorten the loop). In this district, you’ll be able to admire a number of traditional houses, a wash-house, etc.
The hikers' crossroads
Landscaped riverbanksIf you’d like to take a leisurely stroll in a natural setting, the “carrefour des randonneurs” is for you! With wooden pontoons lining the banks of the Blanc Douit river and signs to inform walkers about the local flora and fauna, this is a real place to relax. The trail also features a handi-fishing pontoon, picnic tables and a pétanque court.
Treat yourself
Restaurants and marketsIf you’re feeling peckish, you’ll be spoilt for choice! Tempted by new flavors? Take a trip to the Japanese restaurant Umi to Mori, where you’ll be warmly welcomed by Franco-Japanese chef Michiko Suzuki. Fancy a delicious homemade pizza made with local produce? Then don’t delay in visiting Les Quat’Z’Arts pizzeria (takeaway)! For more traditional, hearty fare, we highly recommend the Hôtel de la Gare restaurant, or for bistro fare, “le bar des sports”. Why not come along on a Saturday morning to stock up on tasty local produce at the big market on the fairground? It’s all there! Another more traditional market takes place on Wednesday mornings, “le marché aux veaux” (the calf market), which is still very traditional, with a small classic market right next door.
Le Ravitaillement
Art and workshops for allA visit to “Ravitaillement”, a place for art and rural practices, is a must! Throughout the year, this rural art gallery showcases artists and offers art and nature workshops, readings, meetings and more. The venue is located on the route de Villedieu, opposite the lane leading to the château’s archaeological site.
Local products
Quality and flavourYou can also round off your visit to Gavray with a visit to Distillerie Montjoie and Andouillerie de la Baleine. Don’t hesitate to make an appointment in advance with Léa Kazmierczak to learn all about the maceration and distillation processes for spirits (gin, pastis and liqueurs) during discovery workshops or a small tasting session. L’Andouillerie de la Baleine welcomes you all year round to its boutique, where you’ll find smoked meats and preserves to tantalize your taste buds! Guided tours of this traditional Andouille de Vire factory are also available from Monday to Friday in July and August, and by appointment the rest of the year. The smoking technique will hold no more secrets for you! A 24/24 vending machine will also enable you to make purchases even when the store is closed.
